Life in Brentwood
Brentwood, New York is considered to be a part of Suffolk County. It is a hamlet, which is located in the Town of Islip. As of the most recent census, there were more than 60,000 people living in the Hamlet.
The settlement of the area that is now Brentwood dates back to 1844, when Brentwood formed around two railroad stations that were created to expand the Long Island Rail Road’s mainline. The two stations which prompted the creation of Brentwood were called Thompson Station and Suffolk station.
The Hamlet transformed into a utopian community called Modern Times in March of 1851, but its name was changed to Brentwood in 1864. The hamlet got its name from Brentwood, Essex in England. Brentwood’s utopian community was founded on the belief in modern sovereignty, and all land in the county was private property during the Hamlet’s early years, with the maximum allowable size for sold lots in the county set at three acres. The Hamlet actually had its own private currency and residents were encouraged to pursue their own self interests. Of course, the county eventually evolved from these utopian ideals and the plans for the creation of the utopian community were ended due to resident disputes and other factors.

Courts in Bentwood
If your loved one has passed on, it may become necessary for you to go to court to move through the probate process. The probate process is the formal process required to facilitate the transfer of money and property after a person has passed away. When a person has become incapacitated but is still alive, then someone must act on that person’s behalf. Guardianship proceedings are the process by which a person is declared incapacitated and an appropriate court-appointed guardian is selected.
Probate courts handle issues related to guardianship, probating a will, and winding up the estate under intestacy law if the deceased did not provide instructions in a last will and testament or did not otherwise make an estate plan.
Any court proceedings that must take place in Brentwood related to guardianship and estates should take place in the Suffolk County Court. The website for NY Courts has information on where the court serving Suffolk County is located. The court serving Brentwood is found at the Surrogate Court for Suffolk County. This Supreme Court is located at 320 Center Drive in Riverhead, NY 11901. Those who have questions or who may have business before the court can also contact the Suffolk County Surrogate Court at 631-852-1713.
