Organization Founded in Long Island Aims to Beautify Senior Citizens

A Long Island elder law attorney provides assistance to seniors during their golden years. Seniors may face high costs of healthcare services and costly nursing home bills as they grow older. An attorney at Eghrari Wealth Training Law Firm can help seniors find ways to cover the costs of this type of care. An experienced attorney can also provide advice to seniors on taking advantage of programs and services that can help them to stay healthy and that can help to enhance their quality of life. elder law

Recently, USA Today reported one one simple program which was started in Long Island and which connects seniors with college students for the mutual benefit of the elderly individuals living in nursing homes and for the students. The program is called GlamourGals and it helps to make life a little brighter for seniors living in nursing care facilities.

Program Started in Long Island Enhances Life for Seniors

The GlamourGals program that USA Today reported on was started back in 2000 in Long Island and now has become a national volunteer organization. The purpose of the organization is to facilitate a connection between seniors in nursing homes and high school and college students within local communities. The high school and college students come into the nursing homes to provide beauty make-overs to the seniors, many of whom do not frequently get visitors.

Seniors in the nursing homes enjoy the company of the visiting high school and college students. They are offered the option of getting a manicure, getting a facial, or having their makeup done. The manicure includes not just having their nails filed and polished, but also having hand lotion applied. The facial includes cleansing and moisturizing and the makeup includes foundation, blush, and lipstick. No sharp tools are used, nor is eye makeup.

As the high school or college student completes the makeover on the senior, the young person gets to have a conversation and learn about the older person’s history. This helps the high school or college student to make a connection to events of the past that they didn’t live through and allows them to get a first-hand account of things that happened in the past. As the founder of GlamourGals said to USA Today: “that history would have been lost if the senior hadn’t shared it with anyone else.”

The national organization for GlamourGirls provides supplies to the different local chapters of the organization, which now operates in nursing homes in 16 states across the country. The products, like disposable makeup applicators and nail polish, are donated by beauty supply companies and by individuals. The founder of GlamourGirls believes it is important to offer seniors different options for the beauty treatments they receive because choices are often limited for nursing home residents. When they get to choose which specific treatment they want, this makes the experience better.

The vice president of one of the local chapters of GlamourGirls told USA Today that some seniors come down to each makeover that occurs on a monthly basis at their nursing home, and that many people have told her that they look forward to the event all month. This is especially important for seniors who do not get a lot of other outside visitors and who thrive on the contact with young people that the GlamourGirl program is able to provide.

There are close to 100 chapters of GlamourGirls at high schools and colleges, and more are started on a regular basis. Hopefully, the idea will continue to spread and to make a positive impact on the lives of more seniors who live in nursing home environments.

Getting Help from A Long Island Elder Law Attorney

Programs like GlamourGirls can help make life a little better for seniors who are living in a nursing home. However, many seniors have intensive requirements for services and support which go far beyond just needing occasional visits. As a person gets older, health conditions or the effects of aging could make living independently difficult or impossible. Finding community support to stay independent as long as possible is important, as is having the ability to cover nursing home costs when necessary.
