The MetLife Mature Market Institute conducts a survey every year that examines long-term care costs around the country. They provide national averages, and they also drill down further to provide the average costs within specific states and metropolitan areas. In 2012 the national average charge for a single day in a private room in a nursing home in the United States was $248. If you get out your calculator and multiply this by the number of days in a year you come up with an annual expense of $90,520.
