Preventing Elder Financial Exploitation in New York

Elder financial exploitation New York

Financial exploitation is the most common form of elder abuse in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Unfortunately, experts estimate that for every case that is discovered, many more go unreported. Among the most damaging methods used by abusers is identity theft, a crime that disproportionately impacts older individuals. To help address this widespread problem, the Eghrari Wealth Training Firm provide practical guidance on preventing elder financial exploitation in New York.

Why Older Adults Are at Higher Risk

Although identity theft can affect people of all ages, seniors are often targeted more frequently. There are several reasons for this increased vulnerability. Criminals now use sophisticated digital schemes, such as phishing emails, malware, robocalls, and large-scale data breaches, to capture personal data. Older adults who did not grow up with modern technology may find it harder to recognize warning signs of digital fraud. In addition, many seniors maintain a natural sense of trust, which can make them more likely to believe someone claiming to represent a government office or well-known business. Retirees also tend to have more established financial profiles, investment accounts, or retirement savings, which makes them appealing to identity thieves. The combination of significant assets and limited familiarity with rapidly evolving scams creates a dangerous environment for exploitation.

Practical Safeguards Against Identity Theft

Whether you are a senior yourself or helping a family member, taking proactive steps to protect against fraud is essential. A few key strategies include:

  • Stay Educated on Common Scams: Learning how identity theft schemes operate is the first line of defense. Seniors and their caregivers should keep up with alerts from reliable organizations such as the Federal Trade Commission or the New York State Office of the Attorney General. Recognizing common tactics helps reduce the chances of becoming a victim.
  • Guard Personal Information: Never provide your Social Security number, bank account details, or Medicare number unless you are completely certain about who is requesting the information and why. For instance, if someone calls claiming to be from the IRS or Social Security Administration, hang up immediately. Look up the official number and make the call yourself to confirm. This same practice should be applied to suspicious emails with links. Instead of clicking, type the web address directly into your browser.
  • Avoid Unsecured Networks: Public Wi-Fi, often found in airports, restaurants, or libraries, is not secure and can be exploited by hackers to intercept sensitive information. Refrain from conducting online shopping or financial transactions over these networks. When outside your home, connect only to secure networks that require a password.
  • Do Not Respond to Unsolicited Messages: Unrequested phone calls, text messages, and emails are among the most common ways criminals gain access to personal information. If you receive an unexpected communication from an unknown source, delete it or hang up. Even if the message conveys urgency, independently verify the claim before taking any action. Scammers often attempt to create fear in order to pressure victims into handing over information quickly.
  • Strengthen Online Security: Create strong passwords that are unique for each account and avoid using easily guessed details such as birthdays or pet names. A password manager can help keep credentials safe. When possible, activate two-factor authentication to add another layer of security to your accounts.
  • Be Cautious on Social Media: Criminals often scan social networking sites to collect personal details. Review your privacy settings to ensure that only friends or trusted contacts can see your posts. Do not publicly share your phone number, address, or travel schedules.
  • Monitor Credit Regularly: Keeping a close eye on your credit report can help you identify suspicious activity early. Every consumer is entitled to one free report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, through www.annualcreditreport.com

Resources Available in New York

Seniors in New York also have access to state-specific resources aimed at combating financial exploitation. The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) provides educational programs and connects seniors to protective services. The New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) offers fraud prevention information, financial literacy programs, and support for those who may have already been victimized. Local agencies on aging throughout the state also provide workshops, counseling, and referral services to help protect older adults from scams.
